Introduction
Floral Guernsey was formed many years ago by the States Tourism Board to promote floral events throughout the bailiwick. From 2006, the Floral Guernsey council was restructured as an independent organisation run almost entirely by volunteers and funded by a combination of States grants through Culture and Leisure and private sponsorship.
The aims of Floral Guernsey are not just to promote gardening and flowers, although this is a major aspect, but also to improve the environment, keep the island tidy, create conservation and sustainable planting schemes, and generally enhance the island for residents and visitors alike.
The Forest Floral Group meets regularly to achieve these aims in our parish. We take part in the annual Floral Guernsey Community and Douzaine Room competitions, the winner of which then goes on to the Britain in Bloom competition the following year.
Apart from the committee, we have volunteers who assist us in many different areas. In the summer, dead-heading and watering are major preoccupations, and help is also needed with wombling, social and fundraising events, growing-on plants for our plant sale, assisting with the schools' gardening clubs, delivering letters, paperwork, etc, etc. We are forever grateful to our happy band of volunteers.
